MSJHS wins Class 4A Regional

Mahomet-Seymour’s top-seeded eighth-grade boys’ basketball team won an IESA Class 4A regional championship at home on Tuesday (Feb. 1), downing second-seeded Urbana, 35-28.
A day earlier, on Monday (Jan. 31), the Bulldogs started their postseason journey with a 35-25 triumph over fourth-seeded Champaign Jefferson in the semifinals.
Against Urbana, M-S hit 5-of-7 free throws in the final quarter to secure the win.
Jackson Bohm tossed in a team-high 13 points. Landyn Hannah netted 10 points. Cade Ashby and Nolan Franz each contributed four points. Ryan Pruitt and Max Young netted two points apiece.
The Bulldogs led, 12-8, after one quarter and 24-16 at halftime.
Against Jefferson, Bohm hit 16 points and Hannah totaled 13 points. Franz added four points and Cole Thrasher chipped in with two points.
M-S led, 11-10, after one quarter and 18-16 at halftime.
The Bulldogs will host a sectional game on Wednesday (Feb. 9) against either Mount Zion or Effingham. They play one another on Saturday (Feb. 5) in Mount Zion in the regional finals.
The eighth-grade M-S boys’ basketball team finished the regular season with an overtime 38-31 loss at Normal Kinglsey on Thursday (Jan. 20).
The Bulldogs won their home finale on Tuesday (Jan. 18), 34-23 over Tuscola.
Against Kingsley, Hannah put in 12 points. Bohm hit eight points and Ashby had seven points.
Kingsley led, 27-21, entering the final quarter, but M-S rallied and created a 29-29 tie, forcing OT.
Against Tuscola, Bohm netted a team-high 16 points. Contributing four points apiece were Ashby, Isaiah Benson and Franz.
M-S jumped ahead early, leading 10-4 after one period.
The eighth-graders are 17-6 and have won three consecutive games.
