Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade boys’ basketball team opened the season by winning its own tournament last week.

The Bulldogs opened with a 39-23 victory over Mount Zion on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Jack Gallier with 13 points and Braden Pagel with 12 points were the top M-S scorers.

“Great game to start the season,” M-S coach Doug Ingold said. “Defensively we played really well.  We were able to hold Mount Zion scoreless in the second quarter.”

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, M-S topped Danville North Ridge 34-24. Gallier (12 points) and Pagel (nine points) were the top point-makers for the home team.

“This is a team we lost to last year in our tournament,” Ingold said. “We knew there were going to be some difficult matchups as they have a lot of size and quickness.

“Danville also has a very talented guard who can do a little bit of everything. Finn Randolph played great defense against their best player and also scored seven points.”

The Bulldogs concluded a 3-0 week by edging Tolono Unity 32-29 on Friday, Nov. 8.

Gallier hit a team-high 19 points. Pagel added eight points, all in the fourth quarter. He hit two late free throws to help seal the victory.

“Unity has a very good team,” Ingold said. “They have a lot of shooters and kids that can score off the dribble.

“We were down after three quarters. Unity tried to stall and take time of the clock during the second half. We did not take the lead until half-way through the fourth quarter after speeding up the game with some full court pressure.”

M-S returns to action today at home against Paxton-Buckley-Loda. The seventh-grade game will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The eighth-graders have a 12-7 season record.
