Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team posted back-to-back wins to start play in the Bulldog Invitational.
M-S topped Tuscola, 38-12, on Monday (Oct. 3) and followed up with a 37-7 victory over Mount Zion on Tuesday (Oct. 4).
Courtney Fonte led a balanced attack against Tuscola with a nine-point outing. Breckyn Hess notched eight points, Hannah Martin returned to action with seven points and Aubrey Meints hit six points.
Against Mount Zion, Fonte posted her fourth consecutive game with at least one three-point basket and shared the scoring lead for the Bulldogs with Martin. Each tallied nine points. Addison Schultz contributed seven points.
M-S shut out Mount Zion in the second half, ending the game on a 14-0 run.
The M-S seventh-graders split their first two games in the Bulldog Invitational, overpowering Tuscola 40-2 on Monday (Oct. 3) for its fifth consecutive win before losing to Mount Zion, 33-14, on Tuesday (Oct. 4) after falling behind 16-0 in the first quarter.
Abi King scored a game-high 15 points against Tuscola and teammate Penelope Bird netted 10 points.
King’s five points led the Bulldogs against Mount Zion.
On Thursday (Sept. 29), the M-S seventh-graders continued their winning ways, defeating Effingham, 29-9.
Kennedy Ashby hit a team-high seven points.
The eighth-graders lost a hard-fought 25-21 decision to Effingham.
Fonte led the Bulldogs with 11 points, and nailed 4 of 6 second-half free throws.
On Wednesday (Sept. 28), King scored 10 points, Ashby netted eight points and Katie Hunter added seven points as the M-S seventh-grade girls’ won at home over Charleston, 31-7.
M-S led 12-5 at halftime, but pulled away by allowing just two points after intermission.
The Bulldog eighth-graders also posted a victory, rolling past Charleston, 36-7, even with two starters sidelined by illness.
Fonte notched a team-high 10 points, sinking two three-pointers early. Hess chipped in with eight points.
Both of the Bulldogs’ teams have 7-2 overall records and return to action on Friday (Oct. 7) in the final game of the Bulldog Invitational against Tolono Unity. The eighth-graders will clinch the tournament championship with a victory.
