MSJHS 7th grade boys’ basketball ends season among the state’s top 16 teams in Class 4A

Mahomet-Seymour’s seventh-grade boys’ basketball team fell one win short of qualifying for the IESA Class 4A state tournament.

The Bulldogs’ season came to an end on Monday (Jan. 29) at home in the sectional championship game against Park Forest, 57-52.

The Bulldogs carried a 43-35 lead into the final period, but couldn’t stop Park Forest sharpshooter Kevion Gulley, who made 20 of his game-high 42 points to spark his team’s last-quarter comeback.

Jaxson Tiefethaler led M-S with a season-high 26 points. Nathan Stabler scored 12 points and A.J. Fenelus added nine points. Jackson Dancer tallied three points and Caleb Knox finished with two points.

M-S ends the season with a 25-2 overall record and ended among the state’s top 16 teams in Class 4A.

Park Forest led, 16-13, after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime.

For the year, Stabler was the team’s top scorer (13.4 average) and also the leader in free throw accuracy (61.8 percent).

Fenelus (11.7 average) and Tiefenthaler (7.5 average) were the Bulldogs’ other top scorers.

Jackson Dancer hit a team-best 21 three-point shots. Fenelus made 19 three-pointers and Stabler had 18. They were followed by Evan Franz (13 three-pointers) and Owen Henry (11 three-pointers).

Fenelus was the top M-S scorer in 11 games, Stabler led in 10 games and Tiefenthaler was tops in three games. Franz led – or shared the lead – in two games. Leading the team in one game apiece were Henry and Tyler Schoudel.

Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade boys’ basketball team opened the postseason with a 52-41 triumph over fifth-seeded Urbana in an IESA Class 4A regional semifinal game on Saturday (Jan. 27) at Danville North Ridge.

Jackson Golden led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Preston Clark totaled 13 points and Tristen Adams finished with 11 points.

Also reaching the scoring column for M-S were Konner Fisher (six points), Colin Hammerschmidt (three points) and Luke Buh (two points).

Clark and Fisher both notched two three-pointers.

M-S led, 11-9, after one quarter, but trailed at halftime, 24-21.

The Bulldogs (24-1) have a six-game winning streak and return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 31) in the regional championship game against second-seeded North Ridge. M-S is the No. 1 seed. When the schools played in the regular season, M-S was victorious 49-15.
