Mahomet-Seymour’s highly touted volleyball team — ranked second in the area News-Gazette poll — opened its season on Tuesday with a two-set sweep on the road against Champaign Central.
The Bulldogs posted a 25-18, 25-16 triumph with Kayin Garner handing out 11 assists.
The balanced offensive attack was led by Savannah Matthews (six kills), Lauren Minick (four kills) and Emily Bohn (four kills).
Matthews and Josie Hess sparked the defensive effort with seven digs apiece.
From the service line, both Hess and Ellie Beach collected two aces. Amber Yeakel had one block.
Boys’ soccer
The Bulldogs overcame a one-goal halftime deficit and salvaged 1-1 tie in their first match at Metamora on Tuesday.
M-S got on the board in the final 20 minutes when Jacob Janda settled the ball and, with his second touch, put it over the goalkeeper inside the back post. Joah Moore was credited with the assist.
“Although we went into half down, I felt pretty well about how we were playing,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “We were dictating the pace of the game, and winning a lot of individual battles.
“We had them on their heels for much of the second half. Overall, a promising Game 1 against a solid team.”
In the first News-Gazette area rankings, M-S is rated fifth.
