MSHS Softball finishes strong season

Mahomet-Seymour’s third winning softball season in the past decade came to an end Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A Mount Zion Sectionals.

Apollo Conference foe Charleston handed the Bulldogs a season-ending 14-3 loss in a six-inning game.

Charleston (31-4) has set its season record for wins.

M-S (16-15) finished above .500 for the third time since 2008. The 2008 team was the most recent one from M-S with more than 16 wins.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, with Ashley Wheeler scoring the game’s first run.

Charleston scored three runs in the top of the third inning and never trailed again.

Charleston pitcher Emily Price limited M-S to three hits. One was a two-run single by Aubrie Shore in the fifth inning, which cut her team’s deficit to six runs.

Charleston swept the season series from M-S, 3-0, and plays the host Mount Zion team at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the sectional championship game. At one point during the regular season, Charleston was the state’s top-ranked Class 3A team.

The sectional game marked the final one for Bulldog seniors Kameryn Brotherton and Madi Scott.

In a game where the Bulldogs committed six errors, Shore suffered the pitching loss.

Shore finished the season as the team leader in batting average (.460), home runs (13), runs batted in (49) and pitching wins (11).
