MSHS Soccer, Softball and Girls’ Track pick up wins

Mahomet-Seymour remained unbeaten in Apollo Conference girls’ soccer action with a 7-0 shutout at Taylorville on Tuesday.
M-S is 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference matches. The shutout was the ninth for goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein.
Meredith Johnson-Monfort had a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ fifth consecutive win. She scored twice in the opening half as did teammate Maddy Wade.
Cassidi Collins had a goal and two assists. Nyah Biegler also had two assists as did Haley Lester.
The team’s other goal was scored by Mackenzie Moore.
Hohenstein had one save.
There was no junior varsity game.
Girls’ track and field
Mahomet-Seymour won the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay to claim a team victory in a four-school meet at Urbana’s all-weather track on Tuesday.
The M-S foursome on the 1,600 was Madi Balbach, Gretchen Scheele, Olivia Bunting and Brisa McGrath.
Three of those runners were also on the triumphant 3,200 relay: Balbach, Bunting and McGrath. They were joined by Alexa Franklin.
In two events, M-S swept the top two spots. Jessica Franklin beat Lakeida Nichols to the finish line in the 200 meters. In the 100 hurdles, Jessica Franklin led Sylvia Byron to the tape.
Other M-S individual winners were Mara Pletcher in the pole vault and Jessica Franklin in the 800.
Nichols had runner-up finishes in both the 100 dash and the long jump. Amanda Franklin was second in the discus. Balbach was second in the 400.
The Bulldogs’ 400 and 800 relays also placed in the No. 2 spot.
M-S totaled 65 points. Urbana had 62. Danville had 30 and Champaign Central finished with 23 points.
Softball
The Bulldogs (6-5) scored one run in the first inning and never trailed en route to an 8-4 non-conference win over Rantoul on Wednesday at Wabash Park.
Aubrie Shore, Allison Nofziger, Ashley Wheeler and Julia McNaught all had two hits against Rantoul.
Nofziger drove in three runs. Shore had two RBI, but her home run streak ended after seven games.
Madison Maring scored three runs and Layne Acree scored twice.
Shore also pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits in seven innings while walking one and striking out eight.
A day earlier, M-S dropped an Apollo Conference doubleheader at Mount Zion on Tuesday, falling to 2-4 in league play.
In the opener, Mount Zion scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 9-8 win. The winning run was scored with two outs.
Shore was one of three Bulldogs with at least two hits. She was 2-for-5 with four runs batted in.
Leadoff batter Acree was 3-for-5. Kameryn Brotherton was 2-for-4.
M-S outhit the Braves, 13-12, but committed six errors that led to six unearned runs. Shore suffered the pitching loss. She struck out three and walked two in 6 2/3 innings.
Shore continued her prolific power-hitting in the nightcap, a 10-3 Mount Zion win. She homered for the seventh game in a row, and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Brotherton and Nofziger also drove in runs for M-S, which was outhit 13-6.
Shore was the only Bulldog with more than one hit in Game 2.
Wheeler pitched the first four innings and took the loss. She walked one and struck out one. Emily Hale pitched the final two innings.
Baseball
M-S was held to two singles and struck out 10 times in a 14-1 loss at home on Tuesday to Mount Zion in the first game of an Apollo Conference twin bill.
The Bulldogs’ hits were by Jordan Veldman and Lukas Graham.
Tanner Kirts pitched the first 2 2/3 innings and took the loss. Five Bulldog errors led to 13 unearned runs for Mount Zion in the first game.
In the second game, M-S was shut out for the first time this spring, dropping a 6-0 decision.
Veldman had two hits for M-S in the nightcap. He was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and was the only Bulldog with hits in each game.
The Bulldogs were outhit, 7-6, in the second game. Teammates with hits in the nightcap were Austin Biehl, Cory Noe, Dawson Finch and Jack McHale.
Noe struck out four Braves in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss.
The M-S defense committed four errors in the second game.
M-S is 5-4 overall and 1-3 in Apollo Conference games.
