MSHS Soccer remains unbeaten in Apollo Conference, Girls’ Track takes meet at Centennial, Boys’ Track finishes second at Pontiac Relays

Brooke Benson and Haley Lester each scored twice and Maddy Wade had a goal and three assists on Tuesday as Mahomet-Seymour maintained its unbeaten record in Apollo Conference matches with a 6-1 Senior Night verdict at home over Charleston.
The match’s first goal was scored by M-S’ Mackenzie Moore.
Lester, Moore and Wade are all seniors.
Cayla Koerner and Ainsley Jessup each had one assist for the Bulldogs.
Jessup is also a senior as are Sarah Amjad, Alese Hutchison and Maddie Louis.
M-S is 16-1 overall and 6-0 in Apollo matches. Against league foes, the Bulldogs hold a 46-3 edge in goals scored.
The Senior Night win enabled the Class of 2019 to have more varsity wins during their four years than any other graduating class in school history.
With a minimum of five matches remaining, the Class of 2019 has 72 wins, breaking the previous mark (71) held by the Class of 2018.
Noelle Bailey had three saves against the Trojans.
The Bulldogs return to action today at Lincoln.
Girls’ track and field
Mahomet-Seymour had multiple finishers in nine events on Tuesday and outscored three other schools in a meet at Centennial.
The Bulldogs totaled 70 points. Runner-up Champaign Central had 61.99 points.
M-S placed 1-2 in three events.
Elizabeth Sims outraced Brisa McGrath in the 800 meters. Sims’ time was 2 minutes, 29.71 seconds. McGrath finished in 2:31.46.
Teammate Gretchen Scheele was eighth in the race at 2:43.47.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Sylvia Byron was first in 17.98 seconds, followed by Amaya Francom in 18.75.
The Bulldogs swept the top three positions in the pole vault, led by Cece Abramson (10 feet, 6 inches).
Trailing her were Mara Pletcher (9-6) and Kailey Bell (8-0).
The other Bulldog individual winner was high jumper Madi Balbach (4-8). Emily Parrott was fourth at 4-2.
M-S made its presence felt in the 1,600 meters. Squad members ran 2-3-4.
Chloe Allen was the runner-up in 5:46.37. Emily Bednar was third (5:46.46), followed by Klein Powell (5:48.48).
The Bulldogs had an exciting finish in the 1,600-meter relay. M-S entered two teams and they crossed the finish line less than two-tenths of a second apart.
A unit featuring Bednar, Powell, Sims and Balbach was timed in 4:41.19 and ended in third place.
The other foursome included Abramson, Scheele, McGrath and Allen. Their collective time was 4:41.32. They took fourth.
Other Bulldog runners who placed were Lakeida Nichols (second in the 100 meters, 12.87 seconds), Ariana Lingard (sixth in the 100 meters, 14.15 seconds), Parrott (seventh in the 200 meters, 30.82 seconds) and Francom (second in the 300 hurdles, 51.90 seconds).
Five different squad members were top-eight placers in either the shot put or discus or both.
Hailee McCall-Ochs and Caitlin Thomason were double placers.
McCall-Ochs was second in the shot put (31-2 ¾) and fourth in the discus (81-7).
Thomason was seventh in the shot (27-2 ¾) and fifth in the discus (78-10).
Gwen Tee was sixth in the shot (27-9 ½), Andrea Penrose was third in the discus (82-11) and Chloe Brock was eighth in the discus (71-5).
The girls’ team returns to action on Friday in the Urbana Invitational.
Boys’ track and field
M-S won four varsity events and one in the freshmen-sophomore division on Tuesday at the Pontiac Relays.
Hunter Hendershot was victorious in both the shot put (57 feet, 5 ½ inches) and the discus (156-5).
C.J. Shoaf captured the high jump (6-2).
In the frosh-soph pole vault, Clayton Kessler was the winner (12-6) with a mark that enabled him to place second among all competitors.
The Bulldogs’ other win was in the 440-meter shuttle hurdle relay (1 minute, 7.69 seconds). Relay runners were Daunte Roberts, Peter Slezak, Ryan Whitehouse and Shoaf.
In the varsity portion of the six-team meet, M-S scored 72.98 points and was second to meet champion Prairie Central (78).
In the frosh-soph division, M-S totaled 10 points and placed sixth. Olympia collected 50 points to win the frosh-soph crown.
M-S had a series of strong showings from its relay teams, including a runner-up performance in the varsity 3,200-meter relay. The runners were Jonah Singer, Kyle Nofziger, Joseph Scheele and Mathias Powell.
They stopped the clock in 8:18.77.
The varsity 400- and 800-meter relays shared many of the same runners. The 400 foursome of Corey Cebulski, Grant Brown, Peter Kamp and Coli Balbach ended third in 45.78 seconds.
The 800 relay featured Cebulski, Brown, Kamp and Roberts. That group took fourth in 1:38.52.
Both the varsity and frosh-soph 1,600-meter relay teams finished fifth.
The varsity unit consisted of Clayton Kessler, Micah Perkins, Tyler Lewis and Balbach. Their time was 3:58.01.
The frosh-soph 1,600 relay unit featured Scheele, Matthew Sims, Nick Mies and Joshua Wilcoski. They were timed in 4:10.44.
Also placing fifth was the frosh-soph 3,200 relay of Sims, Wilcoski, Taylor Fan and Mies. They were timed in 9:37.91.
The other relay at the Pontiac event was a distance medley one which covered 3,200 meters, including a 1,200 anchor leg. The M-S varsity squad of Balbach, Perkins, Singer and Powell was sixth in 8:31.00.
The frosh-soph foursome of Sims, Lewis, Scheele and Nofziger took third in 9:15.81.
The Bulldogs had two placers in the open 1,600 meters. David Wilcoski was fourth (5:06.04) and Gabe Wisnasky was eighth (5:33.80).
M-S earned points in the shot and discus besides the ones Hendershot scored.
Morrie Mendenhall was third in the shot put (47-5).
Bulldogs Costen Campion and Sam Garber were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the discus. Campion’s best was 128-9. Garber had a toss of 120-1.
Garber was 10th overall in the shot (37-7 ¼), but second in the frosh-soph division. Daniel Renshaw was fifth in the frosh-soph shot (34-5).
Other placers for M-S were members of the jump crew.
Whitehouse was fourth in the high jump (5-8) while Lewis was sixth in the frosh-soph high jump (5-0).
Brown placed fourth in the pole vault (12-0).
Noah Powell was ninth in the triple jump (35-5 ¼).
In the frosh-soph long jump, Erik Christianson was seventh (14-5) and Ashton Stoudt was eighth (14-4 ½).
The M-S boys’ track and field team returns to action on Friday in the Gene Ward Invitational at Centennial High School.
Softball
Mahomet-Seymour out-hit the home team on Monday in Buffalo, 11-6, but fell short in the runs scored column, 4-3, to Tri-City in an eight-inning game.
Ashley Wheeler had three of the Bulldogs’ 11 hits. Julia McNaught and Carlee Scott each finished with two hits.
Aubrie Shore’s one hit was a home run.
Shore and Karley Yergler shared the pitching duties.
Shore pitched the first four innings, and allowed three hits. She walked five and struck out seven.
Yergler pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, yielding three hits, walking no one and fanning two batters.
M-S is 12-7 overall and has won four of its last five games.
