The Mahomet-Seymour High School Math Team won the ICTM State Math Competition at the University of Illinois on Saturday.

Finishing just 22 points ahead of Richmond-Burton with 783 points, M-S also topped Latin School of Chicago, Lake Forest Academy and Morton, which finished in the top five, to capture the state title.

M-S Math Team Sponsor Eric Potter said that when the team began practice two months ago, they didn’t formally set any goals, but winning a state championship was on everyone’s minds.

“We took first in 2016 and 2017, but then fell back to third last year,” Potter said. “I think a lot of the team was newly motivated to try to win again.”

The Bulldogs were led by seniors Nick Morrow, Cassidy Waldrep, Jessica Berkman, Michal Strzebonski, Emma Amjad, Sarah Amjad, Archi Patel and Saloni Patel.

“This group of seniors have really pushed the Math Team (and other academic teams) to a new level,” Potter said.

The graduating 2018-2019 class won the state championship three out of their four years.

Morrow took first in the pre-calculus competition while Strzebonski placed sixth and Berkman finished ninth.

Other individual winners included sophomores Clayton Kessler who took runner-up in Geometry and Ella Tietz who placed fifth. Freshman Katya Sakhartova captured first place in the Algebra I competition and Jonah Singer placed fourth.

To round out the top score were the Bulldogs pulling together to place in team competitions.

Emma Amjad and Sarah Amjad took third in Oral Presentation, Nick Morrow and Michal Stzebonski placed third in J/S 2-person and Mike Taylor and Katya Sakhartova placed third in F/S 2-person.

The Pre-Calculus team (Morrow, Berkman, Strzebonski, Waldrep, A. Patel, S. Patel), Geometry Team (Kessler, Tietz, Mike Taylor, Matthew Simms, Ramirez Kennedy, Huang), Algebra 1 Team (Sakhartova, Singer, Harrisongan, Garrison, Liang, Ryding), Calculator Team (Morrow, Waldrep, Ramirez Kennedy, Garrison, Singer) and F/S 8-person Team (Kessler, Tietz, Taylor, Simms, Sakhartova, Harrison, Liang, Ryding) all placed first.

J/S 8-person Team (Berkman, Strzebonski, S. Patel, A. Patel, Honningford, Williams, Bruner, Liagridonis) took fourth and the Algebra 2 Team (Honningford, Williams, Brunner, Liagridonis, Watson, Stremming) placed 10th.

Potter said that the Math Team is more than just their accomplishments in Regional and State competition.

“In the end, I want each participant to get better at math and enjoy learning about math more,” he said. “ I think math team is something that everyone can benefit from in terms of helping in their math class, doing better on the SAT/ACT, and just simply learning to think more mathematically and enjoy the challenge and discipline of participating!”
