MSHS Girls’ Basketball and Wrestling come up with wins, Boys’ Basketball falls to Washington

In Tuesday night action, the Mahomet-Seymour wrestling and girls’ basketball teams were victorious while the boys’ basketball team lost a six-point decision.

Seven Bulldogs won matches as the team edged Mattoon 33-31. Two of the wins were due to pins. Three others came in matches where the M-S competitor did not yield a point.

David Spencer (138 pounds) and David Griffet (285 pounds) posted pins in 64 seconds and 44 seconds, respectively.

At 145, Gage Granadino earned a 1-0 decision. At 152, Skyler Yancy posted a 9-0 decision and at 170, Lucas Morgan’s 15-0 decision was scored as a technical fall.

Against the Green Wave, the other M-S winners were Kyle Johnson (160 pounds) with an 8-2 decision and Wyatt Heimann (182 pounds) by forfeit.

M-S also took on Charleston and registered a 54-19 victory.

Morgan and Heimann posted second-period falls. Spencer, Johnson and Griffet all won by forfeit.

Granadino tallied a 17-1 technical fall.

Other teammates who were on the winning end were Boden Freeman (132 pounds) with a 12-2 decision and Lucas Hooper (195 pounds) with a 9-5 triumph as well as Jack Vaughn (182 pounds) and Ben Stahl (220 pounds), both receiving forfeits.

Amanda Franklin had 14 points and nine rebounds and M-S overcame a first-quarter deficit to capture a 50-40 non-conference victory at Centennial.

M-S (11-6) trailed after one quarter, 12-11. Centennial is 4-14.

Erin Lenschow scored 10 points and Kailyn Northrup had nine for the Bulldogs. Cassidi Collins was the team leader with four assists.

Keida Nichols seconded Franklin in rebounds with five.

Cory Noe was the lone Bulldog to score in double figures (11 points), but the team couldn’t hold onto a halftime lead and lost to the host school, Washington, 44-38, in first-round action of the Central Illinois Mid-Winter Classic.

M-S (14-5) led 14-11 after one quarter and 23-19 at halftime. The teams were tied 32-32 entering the fourth period.

Brooks Coetzee nailed three three-point shots and chipped in with nine points. Holt Campion had six points and made the only two free throws that M-S attempted.

Campion, Noah Benedict and Josh Johnson all collected five rebounds. Campion led all Bulldogs with four assists.
