MSHS closes out regular season, girls’ basketball tops Mattoon

Two days after placing fifth in their own 22-team Marty Williams Invitational, Mahomet-Seymour’s wrestling team returned to the mat on Wednesday and concluded its dual-meet season by splitting two Apollo Conference matches.
The Bulldogs are 14-7 overall and 4-2 in league meets after topping Taylorville 49-19 and losing to Mount Zion, 38-30.
Five M-S grapplers were 2-0 on Wednesday, including 285-pound Seth Buchanan, who ended with victories against all six of his Apollo Conference foes.
One of Wednesday’s wins was by pin.
Noah Schnepper (120 pounds) won twice by pin as did Chance Decker (138 pounds). Gage Granadino (152 pounds) and Daunte Roberts (182/195 pounds) were also 2-0.
Jackson Schlueter (170 pounds) also picked up a win against Mount Zion.
Other Bulldogs with wins against Taylorville were Logan Petro (132 pounds) and Tyler Kittivanichkulkrai (160 pounds) by pins and Wyatt Heimann (170 pounds) and Daniel Renshaw (195 pounds) by forfeit.
In the Marty Williams Invitational:
— Heimann was 4-1 and placed third at 170;
— Granadino was 2-2 and placed fifth at 152;
— Buchanan was 3-1 and placed seventh at 285. Each of his wins were by pin;
— Decker was 3-1 and placed seventh at 138;
— Braeden Heinold was 3-1 and placed seventh at 113;
— Roberts was 3-2 and placed eighth at 182;
— Petro was 3-2 and placed ninth at 132;
— Schnepper was 3-2 and placed ninth at 120;
— Renshaw was 2-3 and placed 10th at 195;
— Cayden Grove was 2-3 and placed 11th at 113;
— Payton Ragona was 1-4 and placed 12th at 106;
— Cameron Livingston was 2-2 and placed 13th at 145;
— Logan Burdette was 1-3 and placed 14th at 182;
— Boden Freeman was 1-3 and placed 15th at 145;
— Kittivanichkulkrai was 2-3 and placed 15th at 160.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Feb. 2 in the Class 2A regional at Urbana.
Girls’ basketball
Kailyn Northrup scored 19 points and Nicole Taylor had 10 points on Monday as M-S (10-12) won at home over Mattoon, 54-42.
Lakeida Nichols had eight rebounds, six assists and six points.
Taylor cleared seven rebounds and Abby Kyle had five boards to go with three steals. Kyle also hit 5-of-5 free throws and totaled nine points.
As a team, M-S netted nine of its final 11 attempts from the charity stripe.
Mattoon led, 10-8, after one quarter, but M-S took a 26-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Maddy Wade had a team-high three assists.
M-S returns to action tonight at Normal West.
Boys’ basketball
M-S scored one-third of its points in the first quarter on Tuesday at home and dropped a 63-60 decision to Centennial.
The Bulldogs led, 20-17, after one quarter, but trailed at halftime, 29-27.
Grant Coleman scored a team-high 16 points for M-S. Lucas Turner added a season-high 10 points.
Connor Kamphaus drained 3-of-4 three-point shots and collected nine points. Dawson Finch scored eight points. Cole Lener and Jordan Veldman each handed out three assists and Lener pulled down a team-high five rebounds to go with a team-high three steals.
M-S (7-11) returns to action on Friday at Lincoln.
