MSHS Boys and Girls Cross Country wins Invitational, Football over Charleston, Soccer and Volleyball results

MSHS Boys’ Cross Country

Ranked #1 in the State AA, Mahomet-Seymour won the 13-team Charleston Invitational Saturday, defeating Danville, which is ranked #3 in the State AA.

Seniors Ryan Hodge, Riley Fortune, Evan Burge and Joe Churm alongside juniors Mathias Powell, Bryson Keeble and Kaelan Davis were the top seven runners for MSHS. Of the 40 medals handed out, MSHS received 9. David Wilcoski and Kyle Sheehy also received medals.

MSHS Soccer

In the semi-finals of the Urbana Invitational, the Bulldogs defeated Danville 2-1.

After falling behind in the first half, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Vikings off the board with a strong showing by Brandon Butzin, Mark Majeres,  Joah Moore, and a slew of other defenders. Brandon Bussman converted a penalty to tie up the game.

Late in the game, Cole Brunner put in a cross offered up by Austin Carr. Jacob Peterson continued his strong effort in the mid field.

The Bulldogs earned their first ever Championship appearance in the Invitational.

In the finals, the Bulldogs came out a bit flat. The Bulldogs put up a valiant effort, tightening up the defense in midfield and were able to claw back into the game.

Brandon Bussman scored a penalty shot. The self proclaimed bulldog “bench squad” was able to make major contributions. With several starters injured or dog tired, several guys came off the bench to provide much needed relief.

Center midfielder Brandon Bussman and center back Brandon Butzin were both honored as All-tournament selections.

MSHS improved their overall record to 5-2. The Bulldogs will continue Apollo conference game this week on Thursday and Saturday at home.

MSHS Football

The MSHS Football team bounced back with an Apollo Conference win 24-12 win over Charleston Friday.

Quarterback Dawson Finch connected with Connor Thomason for a touchdown.

Junior Jordan Veldman, who rushed for 123 yards, scored a touchdown as did Dylan Gates.

Hunter Berg led the defense with 10 tackles.

MSHS Volleyball

The Mahomet-Seymour Volleyball team finished in fourth place at the Champaign Central Invitational Saturday.

The day started off with Kaneland defeating Mahomet 25-20, 25-6. Mahomet came back in pool play, defeating Rochester 25-16, 22-25, 15-12.

In the Quarterfinal game, Mahomet defeated Champaign Central 25-14, 25-21. But in the Semi-final, Dunlap defeated Mahomet 29-27, 29-27.

Mahomet played in the game for 3rd or 4th place, Morton defeated Mahomet 25-15, 25-23.

Savannah Matthews was named to the All-Tournament team with 84 kills, 97 digs, 3 service aces and 5 blocks.

Kayin Garner added 9 service aces and 182 assists.

Hannah Buzicky also contributed 9 service aces and 63 digs. Samantha Hites had 27 kills and Lauren Minick added 36 kills.

MSHS Girls’ Cross Country

The MSHS girls cross country team won the Charleston Invitational Saturday.
