MSHS Boy’s basketball ends senior night with win

Seniors scored 44 points Friday night as Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 79-55 Apollo Conference triumph over visiting Charleston.
The Bulldogs (10-16) led, 28-24, at halftime, but pulled away by outscoring the Trojans 32-12 in the third period.
Junior Grant Coleman had game-high totals of 24 points and six assists.
Senior Lucas Turner hit a season-high 13 points and senior Jordan Veldman reached double figures for the second game in a row, with 10 points.
Turner grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Seniors Dawson Finch, Ben Greenberger, Connor Kamphaus and Connor Thomason all hit three-point shots.
Kamphaus totaled nine points, Finch had six. Greenberger and Thomason each scored three points.
The other Bulldog senior, Jack McHale, handed out three assists and hauled down four rebounds.
Kamphaus had four assists and two steals.
M-S is 4-6 in Apollo Conference contests.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday at Mattoon, an opponent they lost to in overtime at home.
Wrestling
M-S’ lone individual state-meet competitor, 170-pound senior Wyatt Heimann, bowed out on Friday with a 1-2 record at the UI’s State Farm Center.
Heimann lost his first bout, 10-1, to unbeaten Alex Cramer, from Grayslake.
He rebounded to keep Rich South’s Trevaun Suggs scoreless in a 5-0 consolation bracket win.
Heimann was eliminated from the 16-person Class 2A bracket with a 6-3 loss to Centennial’s Dontaice Roberson.
Heimann’s season record is 28-11.
Heimann and the Bulldogs will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the team-dual portion of the IHSA tournament series with a meet at Taylorville against Troy Triad.
M-S is 14-7 in dual meets.
With a win on Tuesday, the Bulldogs would advance into a state quarterfinal bout at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Bloomington’s at Grossinger Motors Arena.
