Marx breaks school record at Bloomington

By Fred Kroner

Freshman Madalyn Marx continued her assault on the Mahomet-Seymour record books Friday (April 14) with her performance in the 22-school Bloomington girls’ track and field invitational.

Marx ran away from the field in the 400 meters, posting a school-record time of 57.29 seconds. The previous M-S record of 57.60 had been set by Jessica Melchi in 2012. Marx won the event at Bloomington, which had 38 contestants, by 2.45 seconds.

She also added a first-place triumph in the 200 meters (personal-best 25.44 seconds), a race she won by .40. Her time was the third-fastest ever run outdoors by a student at M-S. Marx trails only Hall-of-Famer Sharon Farley (25 seconds in 1980) and Hanna Query (25.1 seconds in 2007) on the Bulldogs’ all-time list.

Marx also ran a career-best time in the 100 meters (12.68 seconds) and finished in fifth place.

Teammate Lauren Burr was also a double-placer at Bloomington. Burr took fifth in the 400 meters (personal-best 1:01.13) and ended sixth in the 200 meters (personal-best 26.52 seconds).

The Bulldogs finished with a pair of top-10 placers in both the 800 meters and the pole vault.

In the 800, Ava Boyd ran fourth (personal-best 2:24.78) and Chloe Bundren ended seventh (personal-best 2:32.13).

In the pole vault, Kelsie Fuoss tied for eighth (8 feet, 6 inches) and Abi Weiss tied for 10th (8 feet).

Four other M-S athletes were among the top 10 in individual events: Meah Beacham (third in the triple jump with a personal-best 34 feet, 11 inches), Kendyl Petro (fourth in the discus at 100 feet), Kara Carney (10th in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 51.43 seconds) and Grace Rodebaugh (10th in the high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches).

The top-performing relay for the Bulldogs was the 3,200-meter unit of Morgan Waisath, Jinan Abdo, Callie Jansen and Emma Frazier. Their combined time was 11:24.12. They were 10th.

Meet champion Peoria Richwoods totaled 74 points. Runner-up Normal University High ended with 58 points. Seventh-place Mahomet-Seymour scored 49 ½ points.

M-S will return to action on Tuesday (April 25) in a four-school meet at Champaign Central.
