Mahomet Superhero display up to recognize real-life superheroes
Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, that is evident from Joe and Elisa Dodge’s superhero Christmas display located at 206 N. Spruce Dr. in Mahomet.
Dodge caught attention in 2016 when he created 22 life-sized Marvel and DC comic book characters. Since then he has made another three.
On Friday, the Dodge’s took time to put their Christmas display up in hopes of offering a glimpse of joy in uncertain time.
They included a message for the real-life superheroes, too: “Superheroes can be healing to all, and there are many REAL superheroes out there who are keeping our community safe and healthy at this time.”
Dodge said that he was inspired by others who are putting up Christmas lights so that people could get out of the house, stay in the car and have something fun to look at.
“The post said it was to help bring a little joy during these tough times,” Joe said. “I have been seeing lots of videos on YouTube and Facebook of people trying to keep others entertained or doing tutorials about anything they can think of.
“I had been going back and forth for a few days to see how I could help if anything just to put a smile on anyone’s face. I decided to go ahead and put out some of the decorations from our Christmas display.”
In order to keep some room in the yard for his children to play, Dodge did not put out all of the characters. He also didn’t hang any of them from the house in order to get the project done quickly.
“For the characters that are out, there are the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men as well as a few other Marvel characters sprinkled in there,” he said. “I hooked up all of the lights that are normally on certain characters as well as the spot lights that usually have out at Christmas.
He did add a finishing touch to the roof, though.
“I also put a big red heart in lights up on the roof, I just think everyone needs a little love right now,” Joe said.
“Having the display out right now is just to remind people to feel hopeful and again to put a smile on their face, especially the kids that are missing their friends and school and not being able to many places right now.”
Dodge plans to have the display out indefinitely.
“As long as this pandemic continues to halt our lifestyles, I think the least I can do is keep the smiles coming, which is why I created the display to begin with,” he said.
