MSHS wrestling wins in Apollo Conference action

Mahomet-Seymour’s varsity sports teams lost two out of three days of its schedule to end the week.

The winter storm that deposited more than six inches of snow in the area caused Friday and Saturday events to be postponed.

Only Thursday’s scheduled events took place:

Wrestling

The Bulldogs (11-4) opened Apollo Conference action with dual-meet wins over Lincoln (42-25) and Charleston (70-12) on Thursday at Mattoon.

Seven squad members were 2-0 for the night including Payton Ragona (106 pounds), who pinned both of his opponents.

Teammates winning twice were Chance Decker (138 pounds), Boden Freeman (145 pounds), Gage Granadino (!52 pounds), Tyler Kittivanichkulkrai (!60 pounds), Wyatt Heimann (170 pounds) and Seth Buchanan (285 pounds).

Winning once by pin were Bulldogs Noah Schnepper (120 pounds) and Logan Petro (132 pounds).

Also finishing the night with 1-1 records were Daunte Roberts (182 pounds) and Daniel Renshaw (195 pounds).

M-S continues its Apollo Conference schedule on Tuesday, hosting both Effingham and Taylorville.

Girls’ basketball

M-S started stronger than it finished, dropping a 49-35 decision at home to Effingham.

The Bulldogs led, 12-10, after one quarter.

Maddy Wade (13 points) and Makayla Rosenbery (10 points) were the top M-S scorers.

Ashley Wheeler and Keida Nichols each grabbed five rebounds. Kailyn Northrup handed out five assists.

M-S (8-12) returns to action at home on Friday against St. Thomas More, hoping to end a six-game losing streak.
