Mahomet-Seymour Volleyball wins Freeburg Invitational

Tournament Most Valuable Player Avery Allen sparked the Mahomet-Seymour volleyball team to the championship of the Freeburg Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 15).
Allen pounded 40 kills and collected 40 digs and seven service aces in four matches as the Bulldogs dispatched Hillsboro (25-13, 25-15), Waterloo (22-25,25-20, 15-13) and Pinckneyville (25-20, 27-25) before facing Freeburg in the title match.
M-S won that matchup, 25-23, 25-19.
Joining Allen on the all-tournament team were Bulldogs Libby Bodine and Caylee Folken.
Bodine amassed 42 digs for the day. Folken distributed 52 assists to go with 22 digs and five kills.
Ellie Barker registered 20 kills, four digs, three blocks and one assist.
On Thursday (Oct. 13), Allen collected nine kills, eight digs and four service aces as M-S volleyball locked up the Apollo Conference volleyball title with a 25-10, 25-21 triumph at Effingham.
Barker contributed eight digs, five kills, one block and one service ace. Brianna DiFilippo added five assists and three digs.
M-S is 11-0 in Apollo Conference matches with only one league match left, a Tuesday (Oct. 18) contest at home against Charleston.
Apollo runner-up Mount Zion has a 9-2 league record, also with one match remaining.
The Bulldogs’ junior varsity team handled Effingham 25-20, 25-20 and the M-S freshmen rallied for a win, 19-21, 21-9, 15-11.
M-S (24-3 overall) has won 11 consecutive matches.
