Mahomet-Seymour Volleyball Captures Sectional Championship
By Fred Kroner
The Mahomet-Seymour Junior High seventh-grade volleyball team added an IESA Class 4A sectional championship to the regional title it earned a week earlier.
Playing at Champaign Franklin on Wednesday (March 17), M-S ripped off a 25-14, 25-11 victory over the Knights.
In the first set, the Bulldogs overcame a 7-2 deficit. From that point, M-S tallied 48 of the final 66 points in the match.
The comeback began with Ava Hewitt at the service line for 11 consecutive points, four of which were aces.
Ava Yeakel followed with a six-point service streak, also featuring four aces.
In the final set, Brooklyn Dyer (eight service points, three aces) and Hewitt (six service points, three aces) were consistent servers.
Overall, Yeakel swatted a team-high eight kills. Lily Bosworth had five kills. Finishing with two apiece were Hewitt and Hannah Creel.
From the service line, the leaders were Hewitt (seven aces), Yeakel (four aces) and Dyer (three aces). In all, Hewitt was at the service line for 17 of the 50 points the Bulldogs scored in the season-ending match.
M-S closes the season with a 13-2 record.
Had the IESA not canceled the state tournament, M-S would have been a qualifier for the first time since the 2012 seventh-grade team reached the Elite Eight.
