By Fred Kroner
The winningest girls’ basketball team in Mahomet-Seymour history added to its total on Monday (Feb. 14).
The Bulldogs overpowered Rantoul, 70-26, in a Class 3A regional semifinal contest at Normal West High School.
The game marked the sixth this season for M-S to hit the 70-point mark.
Cayla Koerner scored 16 of her season-high 28 points in the first quarter, staking M-S to a 28-8 lead that was expanded to 45-10 at halftime.
Savannah Orgeron also netted a season-high with 17 points.
Koerner and Nichole Taylor each hauled down six rebounds. Orgeron and Ivie Juarez claimed five rebounds apiece.
Durbin Thomas finished with six steals. Juarez claimed four steals.
Since the calendar turned to 2022, the Bulldogs have played 13 games. Koerner has led – or shared – the team in scoring in 12 of those games.
M-S (27-4) puts its 12-game winning streak on the line on Friday (Feb. 18) – weather permitting – at Normal West in the 7 p.m. regional title game against Bloomington.
The previous school record for wins in girls’ basketball was 25.
The Bulldogs are seeking their first regional crown in girls’ basketball since 2005 and just the second since 1993.
