Mahomet-Seymour to hold three town halls focused on diversity, equity and inclusion
Mahomet-Seymour will hold three Town Hall Conversations throughout the month of September.
Facilitated by the University of Illinois’ Teaching Professor and BSW Program Director Janet Carter-Black and Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work Kevin Tan will guide “discussion and dialog about creating a more inclusive learning environment” in the Mahomet-Seymour School District.
“Our partners at the University of Illinois School of Social Work bring the background and expertise that are critical to the success of these initiatives. We are now ready to move into the vitally important work of talking about diversity, equity and inclusion, and these Town Hall Meetings are the first step,” Superintendent Lindsey Hall wrote in an email to parents.
Hall said that the university staff has already watched recent Mahomet-Seymour board meetings and been given notes about the experiences and concerns of Mahomet-Seymour constituents.
Because of COVID-19 guidance, a 50-person limit was put on attendance. Hall said that if more than 50 people show up, groups will be made with the facilitators to accommodate the discussion.
A “heavy snack” including pizza and chips will be served.
For constituents who cannot attend the meetings, there will not be a way to participate virtually, but Hall said the district is working on that capability for future events.
“The purpose is to listen and gather information to assist with the larger goal of creating a safe and equitable learning environment for all students,” she said.
Once the meetings have concluded, the Mahomet-Seymour School Board will receive a summary of themes that came up during the town halls.
The Mahomet-Seymour School District following locations will host town halls:
- September 14: Seymour United Methodist Church, 108 W. South Street, Seymour, IL
- September 21: Mahomet United Methodist Church, 1302 E. South Mahomet Road, Mahomet IL
- September 30: Candlewood Estates, Tennis Court Area, end of McLean Street, in Candlewood Estates
