Mahomet-Seymour to begin in hybrid option, to re-evaluate in weeks ahead

The Mahomet-Seymour School Board approved Superintendent Lindsey Hall’s recommendation to begin the 2020-21 school year with a hybrid learning option.

Pre-K through grade 5 will attend school in-person four days a week, Tuesday through Friday, in half-day segments. Grades 6-12 will be on an A/B schedule, attending school in-person two days a week. Students will be required to complete 5.5 hour school days, supplementing with asynchronous learning.

Mondays will be reserved for professional development and asynchronous learning.

The Mahomet-Seymour School board will re-evaluate their plan in September. Hall suggested that part of that re-evaluation would be to begin full time in October.

The district will also provide an e-learning option.

  1. But did it really approve that plan? I question the parliamentary procedure on these votes. Dr. Hall’s proposal was defeated and then after the task force vote was passed, Mr. McComb allowed it as a new motion. No defeated motion can be brought back to override a newly passed motion. There need to be a parliamentarian at these meetings. I was embarrassed by the lack of proper procedure, not to mention the Board’s decision to disregard the new Champaign County Public Health Dept’s recommendation for in-person instruction which is at the very LEAST includes face coverings for everyone at all times as well as social distancing of 6 ft. per student. The administration’s proposal admitted it could not accommodate that provision – in fact, not even 3 ft, particularly at the Jr. High. Going to bed tonight really frustrated. My kids are no longer in the school system, but I hope and pray those who are stay safe as well as the teachers who have insurmountable jobs already!
