Mahomet-Seymour tennis opens season with win

After splitting their six singles matches with Mount Zion, the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ tennis team captured wins in two of the three doubles matches and posted a season-opening dual-meet win, 5-4, at the University of Illinois on Thursday (Aug. 19).
Teaming up for doubles wins for the Bulldogs were the No. 1 duo of Molly Fried and Morgan Lee along with the No 3 entry of Jadyn Hannah and Megan Barnhart. All four of the Bulldogs are seniors.
Fried and Lee were triumphant over Alexis Mallory and Kayla Schnipple, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8.
Hannah and Barnhart prevailed over Victoria Madler and Piper Crowder, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
In singles, M-S seniors Averly Sanborn (No. 2), Sophia Slupski (No. 4) and Gianna Hill (No. 5) were victorious.
Sanborn had the most dramatic win, rallying from a one-set deficit to edge Mallory 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Slupski and Hill each won in straight sets.
Slupski topped Schnipple 6-4, 7-5 and Hill overpowered Peyton Schroeder 7-6 (3), 6-0.
M-S (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday (Aug. 24) at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
