The Bulldogs finished second in their season-opening boys’ swim meet on Saturday (Feb. 13) in Champaign.
Champaign Central was the meet winner with 81 points, followed by M-S (67 points) and Charleston (31 points). With two events left to be contested, the Bulldogs were in the lead.
Coach Dean Ekberg called the opener, “a great performance.”
In the eight years of M-S swimming, the 14-point margin was the closest M-S has come to the Maroons.
Freshman Aron Varga made a splash in his prep debut.
He was a double individual winner taking top honors in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle as well as anchoring the triumphant 200-yard freestyle relay unit.
Varga broke the 4-year-old school record in the IM, clocking a 2:13.47.
“His win beat the field by three-fourths of a pool length,” Ekberg said.
The previous mark was set by Josh Ekberg in 2017.
Sophomore Carter Logsdon won the 50-yard freestyle and placed third in the 100-yard butterfly along with anchoring the victorious 200-yard medley relay.
Other top three scorers for the Bulldogs included freshman Owen Kearns with runner-up performances in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly and junior Max Katz with seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Junior Mitch McAnally took second in the 50-yard freestyle and was third in the 100-yard freestyle.
M-S is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at the Centennial pool against the host Chargers and Charleston.
