Freshman Aron Varga and junior Max Katz each won two individual events and helped two relays emerge victorious on Saturday (March 6) as Mahomet-Seymour claimed team honors in the unofficial Apollo Conference boys’ swimming meet at the Mattoon YMCA.
M-S amassed 119 points. Runner-up Charleston had 74 points. Lincoln had 22 points. Those three schools are the only ones in the Apollo which offer boys’ swimming.
Varga was the champion in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 15.86 seconds) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.90).
Katz was triumphant in the 100-yard freestyle (55.25) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.54).
Katz and Varga teamed up with Mitch McAnally and Carter Logsdon for a first-place performance in the 200-yard medley (1:53.68).
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Logsdon, Katz and Varga joined forces with Owen Kearns as the winning foursome. They stopped the clock in 3:59.30.
Kearns (200-yard freestyle, 2:12.97) and McAnally (50-yard freestyle, 24.65) were also individual champions.
Finishing as event runners-up were Kearns (100-yard butterfly) and Logsdon (50-yard freestyle).
M-S completed a sweep of the relays by capturing top honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The swimmers were Logsdon, McAnally, Zach Orr and Mark Gutierrez. They were timed in 1:46.39.
Securing third-place individual finishes for the Bulldogs were Orr (200-yard freestyle), Gutierrez (100-yard breaststroke), Aaron Smith (100-yard backstroke) and Derek Silva (100-yard butterfly).
M-S (7-2) returns to action on Monday (March 8) at Danville.
