Mahomet-Seymour’s softball team checked one box on Saturday (May 28) and will try to check another one in the days ahead.
The Bulldogs dispatched Danville, 8-3, in Saturday’s Class 3A regional championship game. The victory was the school-record 24th for M-S, which had shared the single-season wins record at 23 with the 2004 Bulldog squad.
Next up for the Bulldogs (24-5) is a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 31) date with Springfield in the Mount Zion Sectional. To date, M-S has never won a game at sectionals in four previous appearances.
Chloe Truax (two doubles) and Maddie Logsdon (two singles) were each 2-for-4 in the regional title game. Both Truax and Logsdon drove in three runs.
Logsdon has swatted nine hits in her last 16 at-bats and has eight RBI in her last four games.
Delivering one hit apiece against Danville were Abbey Akers, Maddie Cortez, Kenadi Granadino and Madi White.
Karley Yergler – who was walked three times – scored three runs. Akers scored twice. Crossing home plate one time each were Jayden Hannah, Truax and Kayla McKinney.
Yergler (21-2) pitched a complete-game seven-hitter. She walked no one and struck out 11. Yergler hasn’t issued a walk in her last 20 2/3 innings, covering four appearances.
M-S took the lead for good with a third-inning run that snapped a 2-2 deadlock.
