Mahomet-Seymour softball to play in Regional finals game
By Fred Kroner
Karley Yergler’s third no-hitter of the season – and her second against Rantoul – propelled the Mahomet-Seymour softball team into the Class 3A regional finals in a Wednesday (May 25) semifinal game where the Bulldogs tied their single-season record for wins.
Yergler and the Bulldogs knocked off Rantoul 15-0 at home for the team’s 23rd win. The 2004 M-S team also posted 23 wins.
M-S was limited to six hits, but took advantage of 10 walks to win by the run rule in the fourth inning.
Sydney Ward led M-S with two hits, both singles. Jayden Hannah (a triple), Maddie Cortez (a triple), Kenadi Granadino (a double) and Maddie Logsdon (a double) contributed one hit apiece.
Granadino drove in four runs. Logsdon had two RBI.
Hannah, Abbey Akers and Yergler all scored three runs.
The Bulldogs were successful on 10 stolen base attempts, including three each by Cortez, Yergler and Madi White. Cortez and White both scored two runs.
Officially, Yergler was hitless, but she was walked on all four of her plate appearances.
She walked no one and struck out eight, but a Bulldog error prevented her from throwing a perfect game. Yergler became the first softball pitcher in school history with a 20-win season. Her record this spring is 20-2.
M-S (23-5) will return to action on Friday in the regional championship game against Danville at 4:30 p.m. on the Bulldogs’ field.
M-S is seeking its fifth-ever regional crown in softball and the first since 2018.
