Mahomet-Seymour shuts down Mount Zion soccer
By Fred Kroner
Cayla Koerner struck for one goal and two assists on Thursday (April 21) as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team scored a 3-0 shutout at Mount Zion.
Brea Benson and Emma Dallas also notched goals for the Bulldogs, who led 2-0 at halftime.
Nadia Biegler had the team’s other assist.
On Saturday (April 23), Koerner had a hand in every M-S goal as the Bulldogs blanked visiting Champaign Central 8-0.
Koerner had five goals and three assists. Lauren Schnepper contributed three goals and one assist.
Finishing with one assist apiece were Benson, Grace Larson, Amelia Osman and Janel Straub.
The Bulldogs led, 5-0, at halftime.
“The Bulldogs played really well in keeping possession on a windy, but warm, Saturday,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The Bulldog offense played with a benevolent air. Often, they would isolate and then make unselfish extra passes once getting the keeper to commit.
“While the striker line got the stats, the Bulldog backline and midfield group played a fantastic game of possession in moving and keeping the ball for the Bulldogs. This allowed the Bulldogs to keep intense pressure on the Maroons in what could be a preview of the regional final.
“The girls played a greatly improved style from Thursday night in taking what was given rather than trying to force play continuously forward into heavily defended areas.”
M-S (12-0) solidified its hold on first place in the Apollo Conference with the win over Mount Zion. The Bulldogs are 6-0 in league play with two conference matches remaining. Five of the six Apollo wins have been by shutout.
The M-S junior varsity team topped Central, 9-0.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday (April 26) at Charleston.
