Mahomet-Seymour puts basketball season on hold
Mahomet-Seymour released a statement late Tuesday afternoon in regards to the 2020-21 IHSA basketball season.
As a member of the Apollo Conference, Mahomet-Seymour has decided to put the basketball season on hold.
The statement reads: “Both the District and building level administration of Mahomet – Seymour Schools are committed to providing as many extra-curricular opportunities as possible and recognize the unique sentiments of our community. But, as a member of a conference of schools we must also acknowledge the need to coordinate contest schedules as well as the responsibility of serving in the best interest of both our students and the students of other respective districts.
“As such, the predominant conclusion among Apollo Conference member schools is to abide by common legal guidance and engage in practices that are aligned with the ISBE and public; health guidance, which now puts the “higher risk” basketball season on hold.”
School districts were put in the position to make the call on whether or not they would host basketball beginning Nov. 16, as regularly scheduled, after IDPH moved the sport from a medium-risk to high-risk category and the IHSA board voted to continue with the winter season.
The IHSA Spring season, which could potentially be when basketball season resumes, is scheduled to run February 15 to May 1.
Mahomet-Seymour’s letter called for unity amongst all governing bodies so that districts can mak
“Mahomet- Seymour Schools believe that it is in the best interest of our students that Governor Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois High School Association come together to provide clear guidance to how to safely allow our students to participate in basketball this year. Until there is such agreement, and as we wait for any possible additional news, Mahomet-Seymour High School will make what we believe to be the safest and most accurate possible decision and not move forward with the basketball season.”
Other winter sports deemed lower risk: cheer, dance and boys’ swimming can continue their winter 2020-21 season, although dance and cheer are expected to be impacted by basketball being put on hold.
