Mahomet-Seymour golf places 7th at Class 2A IHSA Tournament

Mahomet-Seymour’s boys golf team finished seventh in the Class 2A IHSA state tournament on Saturday (Oct. 7) at the Weibring Golf Course, in Normal.
The Bulldogs’ two-day total was 640. After a team composite of 315 on Friday (Oct. 6), M-S slipped to 325 for the second round.
Class 2A state champion Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin had rounds of 304 and 319 for a winning total of 623.
Lemont was the runner-up (626), followed by Mount Carmel (628), Benton (630), Wheaton St. Francis (634), Mattoon (639) and M-S.
Only the top 10 schools after Friday were invited back for the finals.
Two Bulldogs out of the team’s six competitors scored better on Saturday than on Friday. Leif Olson’s 80 was two strokes better than his first-round tally. Parker Clements’ 82 was also an improvement by two shots.
For the 36-hole tournament, the M-S leaders were Reis Claybrooke (152), Kelton Hennesy (162), Olson (162), Clements (166), Carter Henrikson (172) and Jacob Schoudel (172).
Claybrooke tied for 16th individually in a tourney where there were 111 competitors. Hennesy and Olson tied for 42nd, Clements finished in a tie for 59th while Henrikson and Schoudel placed in a tie for 81st.
The tournament medalist carded a 36-hole total of 141.
After the first day of action at the state meet, M-S stood in a tie for third place with a team composite of 315.
The first-round team leader was Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (304), followed by Mount Carmel (313). M-S was in a three-way tie with Benton and Wheaton St. Francis.
Claybrooke was the Bulldogs’ leader, firing an even par 71 in the 18-hole round played on Friday (Oct. 6). He was one shot behind the first-day medalist.
The Bulldogs’ other first-day scores were Hennesy (80), Olson (82), Schoudel (82), Henrikson (84) and Clements (84).
For the season, Claybrooke held a narrow edge over Olson as the team’s top scorer. He recorded a nine-hole average of 37.4. Olson’s average was 37.8.
Following them were Hennesy (38.8). Clements (41.1), Schoudel (41.2), Henrikson (42.1) and Cole Thrasher (42.5).
All seven varsity Bulldogs registered scores in the 70s for 18 holes at least once, led by Claybrooke, whose 10 rounds under 80 included one 69.
M-S finished 7-0 in dual and triangular meets.
