Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ tennis team secured a school-record three state qualifiers while winning a second consecutive IHSA Class 1A regional championship.

M-S and Danville ended with 25 points on Saturday (Oct. 19) at the Paris Sectional, but M-S won the tiebreaker and was crowned the tournament’s champion.

The tiebreak was the number of entries that qualified for state. M-S had three. Danville had two.

Earning a repeat berth at state was the doubles unit of Adella Bird and Holland Martin. They won their first three sectional matches, before falling in the finals.

M-S also had the third-place doubles entry in Haley Reed and Elana Religioso. They posted two wins in straight sets, lost in the semifinals and rebounded with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the third-place match.

In singles, M-S had one state-qualifier in Eliza Agate. She was 2-2 at the sectional and placed fourth.

The top four placers in both singles and doubles advanced to state, which starts on Thursday (Oct. 24) in suburban Chicago.

The other Bulldog sectional entry, Ashley Shoaf, was 1-1 at the sectional and ended one win shy of landing a state berth.

For the year, Reed and Religioso have an overall record of 14-2. Bird and Martin are 12-3.

Agate is 16-2. Shoaf ends the year with a 15-2 record.

Following M-S and Danville in the team chase were Paris (12 points), St. Joseph-Ogden (10 points) and St. Thomas More (10 points). A total of 11 schools had entries at the sectional.
