Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Tennis Dominates Season Opener with 8-1 Victory Over Mount Zion

In its season-opening match, the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ tennis team swept the three doubles matches in straight sets on Thursday (Aug. 22) and overpowered Mount Zion 8-1 in Mount Zion.

At No. 1 doubles, Holland Martin and Adella Bird teamed up for a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Gadielle Velasco and Caroline Huss.

At No. 2 doubles, the duo of Elana Religioso and Haley Reed combined for a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Paityn Koester and Lucy Schnippel.

At No. 3 doubles, Bulldogs Ashley Shoaf and Lindsay Gowler prevailed, 6-1, 6-1, over Olivia Sheleheda and Vienna Shim.

In singles, two M-S competitors survived three-set matches to earn their wins.

At No. 1 singles, Bird topped Velasco, 1-6, 6-4, 10-2.

At No. 3 singles, Religioso held on to defeat Huss, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.

Other singles’ winners for the Bulldogs were Reed (at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0), Eliza Agate (at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0) and Shoaf (at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2).

Martin suffered a hard-fought loss at No. 2 singles to Koester, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.

M-S (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday (Aug. 27) in its home-opener at 4 p.m. against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley. The match will be played at the Middletown Tennis Courts.
