Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Basketball splits two at Prairie Central Hawk Classic

After two games, Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ basketball team has held the lead after seven of eight quarters.
The Bulldogs, however, split their first two games in the Prairie Central Hawk Classic at Fairbury.
In Monday’s opener, against the host Hawks, M-S carried a 40-27 lead into the final quarter, but were outscored 21-0 during the final eight minutes and dropped a 48-40 decision.
Makayla Rosenbery led M-S with 11 points and hit the only two three-pointers made by the Bulldogs. Haylie Orton grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Cayla Koerner was credited with nine steals.
Nichole Taylor and Ashley Wheeler each put up seven-point, six-rebound nights for M-S.
The Bulldogs were hampered by 33 turnovers in their season-opener.
On Tuesday, M-S rebounded with a 53-21 victory over Chillicothe IVC.
Koerner led the team with 11 points and seven steals.
Taylor scored 10 points along with grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Wheeler and Sammie Beyer each totaled six points and six rebounds.
Rosenbery and Durbin Thomas nailed three-point shots for M-S. Rosenbery had a team-high three assists.
The Bulldogs cut their turnover total to 11 in the second game.
M-S returns to action tonight in the Prairie Central Tournament, facing Pontiac in the 5 p.m. game.
The Bulldogs (1-1) will play seven road games before taking the court for their home-opener on Dec. 9 against St. Joseph-Ogden.
