Mahomet-Seymour girls’ basketball places third at Mattoon Tournament

Led by all-tournament selection Makayla Rosenbery, M-S won three of five games at the Mattoon Tournament and placed third.

In Saturday’s third-place contest, Rosenbery hit a season-high 21 points as the Bulldogs (9-7) thumped Altamont 54-43.

For the third consecutive game, freshman Durbin Thomas produced her top scoring game on varsity. Thomas totaled 14 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Ashley Wheeler matched her season-high with 10 points.

Nichole Taylor cleared six rebounds to share the team-lead with Thomas. Rosenbery secured five steals. Cayla Koerner chipped in with five points and five assists.

M-S led 12-9 after one quarter and 25-18 at halftime.

In Friday’s semifinal game, the Bulldogs fell to Olney East Richland, 59-36.

Taylor posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Thomas scored 10 points and added three rebounds and two assists.

Ashley Campbell and Emma Clements had two steals apiece.

The Bulldogs also lost their finale in pool play on Friday, 54-44 to a Mattoon team that had beaten them by 26 points earlier in the month.

Taylor had another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas scored nine points.

Koerner and Savannah Orgeron each ended with five rebounds. Koerner had three assists.

On Thursday’s first-day action, M-S swept both of its games, opening with a 47-32 victory over St. Teresa and following with a 41-25 conquest of Vandalia.

Koerner (who was 5-for-5 from the field) and Rosenbery each hit 12 points against St. Teresa and Wheeler contributed 10.

Taylor was the rebounding leader with five. Samantha Beyer and Wheeler handled four rebounds apiece. Rosenbery swiped four steals.

Against Vandalia, Taylor turned in a 14-point, 15-rebound performance. Rosenbery added seven points and Orgeron had six points.

Koerner collected five assists, Wheeler finished with four rebounds and Rosenbery had three steals.

In five tournament games, Thomas handled 51 rebounds.

M-S returns to action on Monday (Jan. 6) at home against Champaign Central.
