Mahomet-Seymour finishes ninth at Mattoon tournament

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ basketball team won twice on the final day of the Mattoon tournament and placed ninth.

The Bulldogs dispatched Marion, 47-25, before overpowering Danville, 45-13, in the ninth-place game.

Against Marion, Reese Gallier provided an offensive spark with 14 points. She was followed closely by Adaline Eisenmann (13 points) and Kylie Waldinger (12 points).

Selah Campion contributed three points while Grace Binkley and Courtney Fonte each added two points. Sidney Young converted a free throw.

M-S led, 20-16, at halftime but took command with a 24-4 third-quarter run.

Against Danville, Gallier landed three three-point shots en route to a 15-point outing. Eisenmann recorded 11 points. Waldinger scored six points, Campion hit five points and Binkley had four points. Ending with two points apiece were Hannah Martin and Anna Streicher.

The Bulldogs improved a 19-6 halftime cushion into a 37-9 advantage entering the fourth stanza.

The Bulldogs took two losses in the opening round of the Mattoon Tournament on Thursday (Dec. 28), dropping a 60-38 decision to Effingham St. Anthony and a 51-32 verdict against Mattoon.

Gallier led the way against St. Anthony, popping in 15 points. Hannah Creel and Waldinger each added six points. Finishing with three points apiece were Campion, Fonte and Young. Eisenmann notched two points.

St. Anthony led, 19-7, after the first quarter.

Against Mattoon, Young tossed in eight points to lead the Bulldogs. Erin Dallas collected five points. Gallier, Streicher and Waldinger all contributed four points. Campion netted three points. Fonte and Martin both scored two points.

Mattoon led, 15-8, after the first stanza.

M-S (8-11) returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 4) at Normal West.
