Mahomet -Seymour Drama Club to host “Ghostlight” this weekend
By Brett McMahon
The Mahomet-Seymour High School Drama Club will unveil its fall play this weekend and the students are sure to shine.
Ghostlight, by Stephen Gregg is the play that was chosen by Director Chris Taber. It centers on Garbiella Nettles, an indifferent student that is inexplicably placed in a prestigious academy. But, before she can get herself expelled, she hears ghostly sounds and joins the school play to investigate.
Around 70 students in the Drama Club will be involved in the presentation from cast to stage hands. Four of the students learned how to perform special sound effects and will have that role throughout the show. Despite not having breaks for costume changes, there will be a few wardrobe adaptations. This led to the use of doors on wheels to allow for the changes to take place during the event.
A mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen will have parts in the play. Taber says the older students tend to lead by example, but also feed off the enthusiasm they get from working with the younger group, making for a great team effort. She is quick to point out that a love of theater is a bond that brings everyone together.
Taber chose this particular play because the plot is both sweet and mysterious and includes several surprises.
In addition, she was drawn to the challenges in staging and believes that exposing the students to new and different roles and storylines will help grow their love of theater and build their acting and technical skills.
Ghostlight will have three showings at Mahomet-Seymour High School starting Friday, November 18 at 7pm, then again on November 19 at 7pm and finally on November 20 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased online at https://mshsdrama.booktix.com/ or at the door.
