Mahomet-Seymour captures first place in Apollo Conference

Seniors accounted for every goal on Tuesday (Oct. 10) as the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ soccer team captured sole possession of first place in the Apollo Conference with a 4-1 win at home over Effingham.
Brian Woodbury, Isaac Warren, Kai Jones and Nolan Wheeler netted the Bulldogs’ goals.
Jones distributed two assists and Wheeler assisted on one score in the Senior Night match at Middletown Field.
Wheeler is the team’s top scorer this season with 31 goals. Jones is the team-leader in assists with 24.
The loss dropped Effingham’s season record to 14-5-1.
The team’s eight seniors are Cohen DiFilippo, Charlie Hawley, Mikiah Jones, Wesley Jones, Alexander O’Brian, Isaac Warren, Nolan Wheeler and Brian Woodbury.
On Saturday (Oct. 7), the Bulldogs registered their 11th shutout of the season in an 8-0 win at Danville.
Wheeler netted two goals as did Brody Back.
Notching one goal apiece were Caden Alt, Travis Hoffman, O’Brian and Warren.
Wheeler also posted three assists. Preston Sriver and Woodbury each contributed two assists. Kai Jones had one assist.
Goalkeepers Hayden Litteken and Charlie Hawley combined for the shutout. Hawley had one save.
On Monday (Oct. 9), M-S dropped a 2-1 decision at Middletown Field to Normal Community.
Wheeler scored the goal with an assist from Hoffman.
The Bulldogs (13-4-4) return to action on Thursday (Oct. 12) in their regular-season finale at home against Taylorville.
M-S is 7-0-2 in conference action. Taylorville is 0-9 in Apollo matches. A Bulldog win will secure the outright title for the team, which would be the fourth in the past five years.
Since the 2019 season, M-S is 48-2-9 in Apollo Conference matches.
