Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ golf team captured the second Class 2A sectional championship in the sport  in school history on Monday (Oct. 2), blitzing the 12-school field at Kellogg Golf Course, in Peoria.

M-S’ team composite score was 301. Runner-up Jacksonville posted a 311 score and the third team state-qualifier from the sectional, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, finished at 315.

The only previous sectional crown for M-S in boys’ golf was in 2010, when the Bulldogs went on to earn the state championship.

Two M-S golfers placed among the top five individuals at the sectional.

Leif Olson fired a 73 – including a 35 on the front nine – and tied for second. Kelton Hennesy tied for fourth place after shooting a 74.

All four of the Bulldogs who scored on Monday had rounds in the 70s.

Reis Claybrooke tied for 11th with a 76 and Jacob Schoudel’s season-best round of 78 placed him in a tie for 17th.

The other Bulldog competitors in the 111-player sectional were Parker Clements (tied for 50th with an 83) and Carter Henrikson (tied for 83rd with an 88).

The Bulldogs qualified for the two-day state tournament, which starts on Friday (Oct. 6) at the Weibring Golf Course, in Normal.

M-S’ qualification marks the 10th time in school history the entire squad advanced to state. Last year’s squad was two strokes away from qualifying for state, though Olson moved on as an individual.

The last Bulldog to earn a state medal in boys’ golf was Garrett Cox, who placed third as a senior in 2012.
