Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ cross-country team secured its highest finish at the IHSA Class 2A state meet since 2017 on Saturday (Nov. 9) when they took sixth in the 28-team field.

The 2017 squad won the state championship.

The Bulldogs on Saturday were led by juniors Auggie Gaudio and Henry McMurry, both of whom covered the 3-mile course at Detweiller Park, in Peoria, in 14 minutes and 55.00 seconds.

They tied for 25th place in a field with 236 competitors.

The IHSA recognizes the top 25 finishers as All-Staters. Calculating the times out to the thousandth of a second, Gaudio was acclaimed the All-Stater.

Other M-S runners at state were senior Kaleb Kasper (40th in 15:15.10), sophomore Tate Bode (107th in 15:51.10), freshman Adam Smigielski (161st in 16:14.50), senior Lukas Nykaza (163rd in 16:49.00) and senior Zach Wilcoski (210th in 16:49.00).

Gaudio and McMurry posted the sixth and seventh fastest times by M-S juniors at state. Bode recorded the ninth best M-S time by a sophomore at state and Kasper logged the 12th-best time at state by a senior at M-S.

Running their career-best times for any 3 mile course were Gaudio, McMurry, Kasper and Bode.

Chicago Payton won the Class 2A team crown (113 points), followed by Morton (191 points), Chicago Latin (195), Dixon (196 points), Maple Park Kaneland (222) and M-S (279).

Andrew Walmer is the M-S head coach.
