Mahomet-Seymour boys’ cross country qualifies for sectional meet
By Fred Kroner
Led by sophomore All-Regional runner Auggie Gaudio, Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ cross-country team qualified for the Class 2A Jacksonville Sectional based on their performance on Saturday (Oct. 20) in the Normal Regional at Maxwell Park.
Gaudio was the fourth-place finisher in the 84-runner regional, clocking a 3-mile time of 16 minutes, 00.60 seconds.
The top five placers in every IHSA regional were accorded All-Regional status.
Following the sophomore Gaudio for the Bulldogs were sophomore Henry McMurry (11th in 16:40.40), junior Lukas Nykaza (14th in 16:58.10), senior Lukas Carey (27th in 17:22.60), junior Zach Wilcoski (28th in 17:26.00), junior Kaleb Kasper (30th in 17:29.60) and senior Grant Smysor (38th in 18:03.90).
Twelve schools fielded full teams.
Garnering the regional crown was Mount Zion with 55 points. Runner-up Taylorville had 63 points and was followed by Normal University High (83), M-S (84), Chatham Glenwood (102) and Lincoln (162).
The top six schools at the regional automatically qualified for the sectional as did the top five individuals not on an advancing team.
M-S will run in the Jacksonville Sectional on Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Jacksonville Community Park. The race will start at noon.
To earn a bid to state as a team, M-S will need to place among the top seven teams at the sectional. Also at stake next week are state berths for the top 10 individual runners who are not members of a qualifying team.
