Mahomet-Seymour baseball wins 3A Regional Championship

Playing on back-to-back days, the Mahomet-Seymour baseball team earned back-to-back wins and captured a Class 3A regional championship.
The Bulldogs didn’t allow a run in their first two postseason games after shutting out Bloomington,10-0, in the Saturday (May 28) title game on the Bulldogs’ field.
Blake Wolters (8-0) continued his dominant junior season, stymying Bloomington on two hits in the five-inning regional title game. He walked one and struck out 10.
Wolters has not allowed an earned run in his last 21 innings. For the season, he has given up two earned runs (and five total runs) in 48 1/3 innings while striking out 95.
Counting last season, the 6-foot-4 Wolters has won 11 consecutive decisions.
Carter Johnson slugged three hits for the Bulldogs. Alex McHale, Carter Selk and Chase Wagers each contributed two hits. Selk ripped his sixth home run. Brayden Smith blasted a grand slam homer. Johnson and McHale each landed doubles.
Mateo Casillas had the other Bulldog hit against Bloomington.
Johnson, McHale and Selk all tallied two runs. Scoring once were Jaedon Lager, Smith, Wagers and Wolters. Besides Smith’s four RBI, Johnson, McHale and Selk all knocked in two runs.
Johnson is the team’s hottest hitter with eight hits in his last 10 at-bats.
On Friday (May 27), Zach Courson fired his second shutout of the spring as M-S returned from an eight-day
layoff to blank Centennial, 5-0, in a regional semifinal game at Champaign’s Spalding Park.
The game was scheduled to be played in Mahomet, but was moved due to field conditions.
Courson (7-2) pitched a five-hitter while walking one batter and striking out five.
All nine Bulldogs who batted contributed to the outcome, either by scoring a run, collecting a hit or driving in a run.
Johnson and Selk each landed two hits. Casillas, McHale, Smith and Wolters each added one hit.
Scoring runs were Casillas, Braden Houchin, Lager, McHale and Selk. Driving in runs were Casillas, Selk, Wagers and Wolters.
M-S (25-5) returns to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday (June 2) against Springfield in a Champaign Central Sectional semifinal game.
