Mahomet-Seymour advances to Regional Finals
By Fred Kroner
Three players scored in double figures on Tuesday (Feb. 14) as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ basketball team advanced into the Class 3A IHSA regional championship game in the Bulldogs’ gymnasium.
Second-seeded M-S kayoed Danville, 55-23, in the semifinals and will return to the court at 7 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 17) seeking a repeat regional title. The Bulldogs will face off with third-seeded Normal West (12-17).
Savannah Orgeron led M-S in its postseason opener with 13 points. Durbin Thomas fired in 12 points and Alayna Dewitt contributed 11 points.
Orgeron and Abby Bunting each pulled down four rebounds. Grace Binkley and Kylie Waldinger grabbed three rebounds apiece.
Thomas handled four steals. Bunting and Waldinger both had three steals.
The Bulldogs raced out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and expanded their margin to 32-11 at halftime.
M-S is 23-9 and is 9-4 in games played at home this season. Danville ends the season with a 2-23 record.
Under third-year head coach Garret Risley, M-S is seeking an accomplishment which has never happened since the school formed a girls’ basketball program in 1977. The Bulldogs have never won regional championships in the sport in back-to-back years, but are in position to make history on Friday.
