Mahomet Public Library Employee of the Year: Alyssa Simpson
A bit of kindness goes a very long way.
It’s something that Alyssa Simpson, the recipient of the Mahomet Public Library Employee of the Year award, tries to do every day.
The “Hello” and “How can I help you?” can often fall on deaf ears. But in 2020, Simpson’s attention to the patrons of the library left a lasting impression.
Her nomination forms for the in award said:
“Alyssa is so gracious and sweet with ALL the patrons. She is a steady employee and can always be counted on to do her job.”
“Everyone loves Alyssa! Her smile and friendly way makes her a joy to work with. She takes on projects without complaint and does an excellent job. Her positive attitude is contagious and she is an asset to the library and community of Mahomet.”
“Even though Alyssa is on the quiet side, she always comes to work in a good mood and has a positive attitude. She is also willing to step up and fill in or do whatever needs to be done when asked.”
“Alyssa is one of those people that does a ton of behind the scenes things without really getting much recognition for it. She is always willing to jump in and help out when other people need assistance, and she’s been picking up tons of shifts (working 3 all-day shifts back to back and not complaining about it). She has also made several creative displays and tags for Adult Craft Connection.”
Simpson began working in libraries when she volunteered at Sangamon and Lincoln Trail Elementary school.
Following a passion for reading, Simpson applied for an opening at Mahomet Public Library about four years ago. Since then, she’s just been working to make the library a welcoming environment.
“I, and all of the staff at the library, hope that everyone that comes to the library has a good experience,” Simpson said. “I hope they are able to find the items they are looking for and/or accomplish the tasks that they came in for. (I) am always happy to help when needed. I do my best to be friendly, kind and understanding. I try to focus on being helpful to patrons and my coworkers.”
The team atmosphere at the library is one that encourages kindness, though.
“I work with a lot of great people,” she said.
“Everyone I work with is so amazing, so I was a bit surprised that I was named Employee of the Year. It felt very nice to know that my co-workers thought that I deserved this acknowledgment and it really means a lot to me. It is always nice to have your work be recognized and appreciated.”
