Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: MSJHS Eighth-Grade Girls’ Basketball
The Mahomet-Seymour eighth-grade basketball team, under the guidance of Coach Jimmy Lanphear, has shown remarkable talent and teamwork throughout their regular season and playoffs. Starting with a strong performance, they showcased their skills and determination in regular-season games, which set a solid foundation for their later success.
Their regular season was marked by impressive victories, such as the dominating wins against Rantoul Eater and Mattoon, where players like Penelope Bird and Charlotte Sinclair consistently contributed significant points. These victories were crucial in building the team’s confidence and honing their skills on the court.
However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. The team faced setbacks, including a four-game losing streak, which they ultimately overcame with a strategic win against St. Matthew.
Advancing to the IESA Class 4A regional tournament, Mahomet-Seymour continued to display their prowess. In a nail-biting semifinal game against Champaign Edison, the team, led by Audra Martin’s season-high 10 points, secured a win in overtime.
Their crowning achievement came with the Regional Championship win over Urbana. Charlotte Sinclair’s team-high 13 points were instrumental in this victory. The team’s ability to collaborate effectively was evident, with contributions from various players like Audra Martin, Penelope Bird, and others, highlighting the depth and versatility of their squad.
As they prepare to face University Park Crete Monee, with their impressive 18-8 record, the Mahomet-Seymour team carries with them not just the pride of their recent Regional Championship but also the experience and growth gained throughout a challenging and rewarding regular season.
