Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: Mahomet-Seymour Baseball
Mahomet-Seymour High School’s baseball team of 2023 has made history as the most successful single-season squad in the school’s existence. Finishing the month of May with an impressive 31-6 record, the Bulldogs secured their third consecutive Class 3A IHSA Regional title on May 27.
A closer look at the individual achievements reveals the exceptional performances that propelled the team to this record-breaking season. Seven members of the squad, each with a minimum of 50 at-bats, boasted batting averages surpassing .300. Leading the pack was Blake Wolters, who excelled with a remarkable .433 average.
In terms of scoring runs, Carter Selk (52) and Wolters (51) stood out as the top contributors. Carter Johnson (46) and Wolters (45) led the team in hits, while Johnson (54) and Wolters (38) drove in the most runs. Wolters (24) and Selk (19) showcased their power with the most extra-base hits, with Wolters leading the team with nine home runs and Johnson leading with 14 doubles. Wolters also displayed consistency at the plate, achieving 15 games with two or more hits, closely followed by Johnson with 13.
When it came to stealing bases, Selk (26), Wolters (25), and Johnson (20) demonstrated their agility and speed, leading the team in this category. On the pitching mound, Wolters made his mark with nine appearances and an impressive 108 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings. Throughout the season, he allowed a mere three earned runs, resulting in an outstanding ERA of 0.43. Notably, Wolters broke the single-season strikeout record last year as a junior, and his total this year ties him for second place on the all-time M-S list.
Furthermore, Wolters played a pivotal role in helping the team tie an IHSA state record for the most no-hitters in a season, as they achieved an impressive five no-hitters.
