Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: Dawson Freeman and Makenna Peterka
In September, Mahomet-Seymour Junior High Athletes Dawson Freeman and Makenna Peterka, both showing remarkable skill and determination, drew attention through the IESA State Golf tournament.
Freeman put on a dazzling display at the IESA single-class boys’ junior high state golf tournament. The event took place at the picturesque Metamora Fields on Friday, September 15th. Dawson, displaying remarkable poise for an eighth-grader, finished in a three-way tie for second place.
His rounds of 35 and 36 added up to a remarkable 71, a testament to his consistency and precision on the course. Dawson’s front nine showcased seven pars, one birdie, and a solitary bogey, while the back nine was equally impressive with nine pars. A mere one-shot margin separated Dawson from the state champion, highlighting the fierce competition among the 79 qualifiers for the state final.
This outstanding performance was no fluke, as Dawson had previously demonstrated his talent at the IESA Regional in Paris on September 6th. There, he secured the second spot overall with rounds of 36 and 34 for a fantastic 70, finishing just one stroke behind the medalist. Mahomet-Seymour Middle School placed second overall at the regional.
Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, Makenna Peterka showcased her talents at Metamora Fields on Thursday, September 14th. Competing against 76 talented participants, Peterka finished in a three-way tie for 12th place.
Makenna’s performance on the day included an impressive tally of eight pars, seven bogeys, and two double bogeys, showcasing her determination and ability to navigate the challenging course.
Her journey to this point was highlighted by a standout performance at the IESA Regional in Rantoul on September 7th. Makenna claimed the regional championship with rounds of 49 and 42, totaling an impressive 91. She finished five shots ahead of the runner-up, a testament to her dominance on the course.
