Mahomet Curves to raise money for Laura Dahl
Mahomet Curves invites the community to purchase raffle tickets throughout the month of October to support resident Laura Dahl as she continues to battle breast cancer.
Dahl was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2009. Upon the suggestion of the radiation oncologist, Dahl was scheduled for a breast MRI, which showed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). After a bone scan, she learned she had Stage 4 HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer.
In the first two months of her diagnosis, there were no indications that Dahl had brain cancer. Dahl said after her first brain scan, she was diagnosed with “an unremarkable brain.” But in July 2009, she was diagnosed with metastatic brain tumors.
After Herceptin and radiation treatments, Dahl tried clinical trials through the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the William Harvey Research Institute and last year she took a new FDA approved trial out of the University of Chicago.
Dahl released her memoir “Shine” in May. The book uses her CaringBridge entries to chronicle her journey with cancer, but to also bring light to her faith and thankfulness for small miracles that have happened along the way.
“Shine” is available through Amazon and also at Mahomet Curves where residents can also purchase raffle tickets for locally donated items. Tickets will be available throughout October for $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Winners will be drawn at 10 a.m. on November 1.
Curves will accept donated gift certificates or baskets from Mahomet residents and businesses until October 18. For more information, contact Jan Smith at 586-1440.
Both Curves members and nonmembers can also purchase a $10 punchcard in honor of someone with cancer until October 31. The punch cards are redeemable for 10 workouts until November 15.
Proceeds from both fundraising sources will go to a fund set up for Dahl.
