Mahomet Board of Trustees to Vote on $541,786 Sidewalk and Pavement Improvement Bid

The Village of Mahomet Board of Trustees is set to vote on awarding a $541,786 contract for extensive sidewalk and pavement improvements at its upcoming meeting on May 27. The project aims to address deteriorating streets and sidewalks in several older subdivisions.

Project Scope and Locations

The 2025 PCC Patching and Sidewalk Improvement Project encompasses critical repairs and upgrades across multiple neighborhoods, including:

  • Heather Drive at Patton Drive (near Carle and Fisher National Bank)
  • Hillside and Ridgewood Drives
  • Summit Ridge Road
  • Southfield and Orchard Drives
  • Several intersections within the Sandy Ridge subdivision, such as Jeffery and Kimela, Amy and Kimela, Sandy Ridge Drive at Amy and Jody, and the 800 block of Amy Drive

Most of these locations date back to the 1990s and are showing significant wear, particularly at intersections. The plan calls for replacing the existing 6½-inch-thick concrete with new 7-inch patches, and includes targeted ADA sidewalk improvements to enhance accessibility for all residents.

The village received eight bids for the project after advertising widely, with A&A Concrete LLC of Urbana submitting the lowest complete bid at $541,786. Feutz Contractors came in a close second at $542,938, while the next lowest bid was more than $70,000 higher. Village staff noted that A&A Concrete has previously completed projects for Mahomet, including recent work on Fox Run and Huntleigh Drive.

Despite hopes that a larger project would yield lower per-unit costs, the engineer’s estimate was 24% below the two lowest bids. Staff attributed higher prices to a regional glut of roadway work, rising concrete prices, and increased trucking costs. After considering alternatives, staff recommended proceeding with the full project.

The project will be funded through a combination of Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) funds, with $112,500 coming from MFT and $420,000 from CIP allocations. The total project budget stands at $532,500, slightly below the bid amount, but staff recommend adjusting appropriations to cover the difference. Of the total, approximately $30,000 is earmarked for sidewalk and ADA improvements, with the remainder dedicated to pavement patching.

  1. I would love to see improvement in the township as well. Many streets between
Turkey Farm and Timberview are dire need of improvement.
