Magazine fundraiser helps MSJHS raise money for technology

Mahomet-Seymour Junior High students are asking family, friends and Mahomet residents to renew their magazine subscriptions to raise money for the school.

Students were introduced to this year’s initiative on Friday as they gathered in the gymnasium for an assembly.  MSJHS has participated in magazine sales for almost 40 years.

Principal Heather Landrus said at a time when Mahomet residents are swamped by fundraising campaigns, magazine subscriptions are a good way give readers a discount while also raising money for the school.

Many magazine subscriptions sold through American Publishers, the organization which hosts the fundraiser, can be up to 70 percent off the newsstand price. MSJHS raises nearly $13,000 each year through the fundraiser. The money has been used for technology in the past, but Landrus said while a few teachers have requested smartboards this year, some of the money may also just be used for classroom supplies.

The Mahomet-Seymour School District is looking into a 1-to-1 concept where students will have some sort of device with them on a daily basis.

“I think we are still a few years away from that here in Mahomet, but if you look at other schools that’s where they are moving,” Landrus said.

With dark fiber installed throughout the District, Mahomet-Seymour is moving towards becoming a Google school where students submit papers online or take tests online. Many textbooks are also now available online.

“If we want to prepare our kids for the future, we’ve got to get them used to using electronics,” Landrus said. “If we’re not preparing our kids electronically to use those devices in a safe manner, to be able to do the research in a quick manner and come up with whatever they need for their classes, we’re doing a disservice.”

American Publishers has also provided students with an opportunity to reach out to the community using technology by giving them the option to collect online subscriptions using a personal avatar.

Students who reach certain levels of sells will receive incentives. In the past, students have ridden in a limousine to Jupiter’s and gone to a Cardinals game. This year students have a chance to meet professional BMX riders who will also deliver an anti-drug message.
