M-SJHS boys’ cross country wins Edison Invitational
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour raced to team honors on Saturday (Aug. 28) in the 19-school Champaign Edison boys’ cross-country invitational at Parkland College.
The composite M-S team score was 56 points. Runner-up Tolono Unity ended with 63 points and third-place Mount Zion totaled 69 points.
The Bulldogs had three athletes secure top-10 finishes, led by Auggie Gaudio, whose 2-mile time of 11 minutes and 56 seconds placed him fourth overall.
Teammates tracking him were Henry McMurry (fifth in 12:03) and Ethan Peterka (eighth in 12:16).
Each of the M-S top three are eighth-graders.
“The boys’ varsity also proved to be a race to watch,” M-S coach Lisa Martin said. “With a veteran lineup, the Bulldogs fared well and were victorious.
“The boys’ team switched up team leaders throughout the race, which allowed for us to earn the victory that we did. The best part is that they worked as a team, picking up the pace when teammates needed their support and working together in the second mile to pack it up closer to the front as a team instead of individual runners.”
In the boys’ open race, five M-S runners wound up among the top 10.
Camden Wood finished fifth in 14:07. Other M-S leaders were Jonathan Franklin (sixth in 14:07.5), Landen Dowers (seventh in 14:10), Jamison Griffen (eighth in 14:25), and Jackson Davis (10th in 14:30).
M-S will return to action on Friday (Sept. 3) in the Chrisman Cowchip Classic.
