The Mahomet-Seymour seventh-grade girls’ basketball team bounced back from a loss in its home-opener on Monday (Sept. 19) to win at Champaign Jefferson, 30-14, on Tuesday (Sept. 20).
Katie Hunter hit a team-high 12 points, including 10 of her team’s 17 first-half points.
“The seventh-grade team experienced a very chaotic game and are learning how to manage those up-tempo games,” M-S coach Jimmy Lanphear said.
On Monday, the seventh-graders lost their first game, 24-18, to Bloomington George Evans. Marley Cloward led the Bulldogs with five points.
On Thursday (Sept. 15), the seventh-graders earned a 22-14 win at Danville North Ridge.
Kennedy Ashby tallied eight points and Abi King added six points for the Bulldogs.
The seventh-graders are 3-1 with each of the wins on the road.
The eighth-graders have rolled up back-to-back wins, dispatching Jefferson, 38-20, on Tuesday behind a 12-point performance from Hannah Martin.
Addison Schulze tallied nine points and Breckyn Hess added seven points. Collectively, Schulze and Hess were 6-for-9 from the free throw line.
“The eighth-grade team started off poorly, only putting five points on the board in the first quarter,” Lanphear said. “We regrouped and went on a 15-1 run in the second quarter and a 12-5 run in the third quarter to get a nice cushion.”
On Monday, the eighth-graders won at home over Bloomington George Evans, 35-19, after building a 25-9 halftime cushion.
Martin tallied eight points and Courtney Fonte made seven.
On Thursday (Sept. 15), the eighth-graders dropped a 36-32 decision, despite 12 points apiece from Fonte and Martin. Fonte drained two three-pointers.
M-S trailed, 26-9, at halftime, but used a 23-10 second-half surge to narrow the deficit. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs rolled up 16 of the 20 points scored.
M-S’ eighth-graders are 3-1.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Sept. 22) at Bloomington.
